DIY One-Ingredient Powdered Sugar

Sometimes I lose all my motivation. In addition to my full-time job as a social media manager, I also do a lot of freelance copywriting. This means that not only do I need to have the motivation to do my regular job well, I also need to push myself to get out there and find ongoing freelance work and do a good job of it so I can put food on the table. Doing this almost every day gets tough and some days I just feel like throwing the cards in and calling it a day. Today was one of those days.

My Official Treat Taster had to go into work early, so I had to catch the bus to work. The bus didn’t show up. So I had to catch the second bus, which is 30 minutes later and takes a longer journey. The bus was absolutely packed with people – probably because the first one didn’t show – and when I rang the bell to get off, the bus didn’t stop. The result? I was an hour and a half late for work and just wasn’t feeling it.

Until a few minutes ago, when something just clicked and all my motivation, springiness and general glitteriness I have towards life came pouring back. I’m not sure exactly what triggered it off, but something clicked which gave me the push to get the last 600 words written for a freelance project I’m working on, get the blog post online for my regular job and publish this blog post.

I’m sure there are days when you feel the same and the usual techniques that pull you out of the slum don’t work. What I’m trying to say is don’t call it a day or throw the cards in.

Something that becomes apparent every single year to me is that things do get better and you have to believe in that. If you’re in a situation that you can improve, then great – do something about it to make your situation better. If you’ve got a problem that you have no control over and can’t do anything about, then stop worrying – there’s nothing you can do. You just have to believe that things will get better and if they don’t, then haul your butt out of there and point yourself in the right direction so your situation does improve.

Speech over – back to the recipe.

Did you know that you can make your own powdered sugar at home? Until I tried it I had no idea, either. The thought came to me when I remembered how people would throw some oats into a food processor and blitz them to make their own oat flour. Turns out the same concept works for turning sugar into powdered sugar! All you need is a food processor or a blender and some sugar.

You’ll end up with a larger portion of powdered sugar than the granulated sugar you put in, so if you need 1/2 powdered sugar, put in 1/2 cup minus 1 tablespoon granulated sugar. If you need 1 cup powdered sugar, put in 1 cup minus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar. See where I’m going with this? Good. Simply throw the sugar in your blender or food processor and pulse between 10 and 20 times to create powdered sugar!

If you’re going to use it straight away, then go for it. However, if you’re planning on storing it, you’ll need to mix it with a little bit of cornstarch to avoid it clumping. A good rule of thumb is 1 teaspoon cornstarch to 1 cup powdered sugar. You can use this stuff exactly like you’d use the box stuff – for icings, cookies, decoration – whatever you want!

  • 1/2 cup minus 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • teaspoon Optional - 1/2 cornflour
  1. Measure out your sugar and pour it into your blender/processor. Pulse between 10 and 20 times until the sugar has turned from granulated into powdery.
  2. Use straight away or mix with cornflour if you plan on storing it.

    I knew about this but not the amounts of sugar needed. That’s great to know. I also hear that you have to pulse it in bursts too as sometimes the blades can get hot and melt the sugar onto the blades therefore burn it. But spectacular post. I’ll be bookmarking this and referring back to it.

    I managed to pick up 10KG of icing sugar, yes you read that right! LOL. I can get sugar and flour wholesale but even so, I still run out and in a pinch this is a great idea for smallish quantities. I definitely add the cornflour too for storing.

    Another great thing about making icing sugar at home, no sifting straight after. Always a brucey bonus. 😉

  5. This is a lifesaver- I use so much powdered sugar I should just buy stock in it! Will the cornstarch affect the powdered sugar in any way? I’d love to make a bunch and store it but I don’t know how the cornstarch will affect future use.
