DIY Homemade Ketchup

If any of you are thinking “It’s Friday and you’re posting a recipe for ketchup? What’s wrong with you?!” you’re totally right! I usually post some fancy drink or cocktail recipe on a Friday, but today it’s just not happening. Although after the week I’ve had, I could certainly do with a drink. Instead, I’m sharing a great recipe so you can make your own ketchup at home, with a fraction of the sugar and no ingredients you can’t pronounce. It only takes a handful of items to make, too, so you’ve got no excuse.

I decided to make my own ketchup because I wanted to make my own BBQ sauce. That totally makes sense, right? No? Well, I love love LOVE homemade BBQ sauce and one of the major ingredients in that is ketchup – which I had run out of. Make sense now? Good. Just so you know, if you decide to make your own BBQ sauce using this ketchup as a base, you’ll be in heaven. Seriously.

DIY Homemade Ketchup

Prep Time 5 mins
Cook Time 30 mins
Servings 1 cup ketchup


  • 1/2 cup tomato paste 140g
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcester sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • 6 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon mixed spice


  • Mix all the ingredients together in a saucepan and simmer over a low heat for around 30 minutes until the consistency is like ketchup. Store in the fridge in a sealed container.

    Could you please tell me what is the mixed spice? where do you find it? If I were to make a large batch, do you know if this would be a water bath or pressure cooker? Thank you so much

      Hi Linda,
      If you don’t have mixed spice, you could always use the same amount of five spice.
      I haven’t got any experience using a water bath or a pressure cooker, so I can’t advise you on this one, sorry!

    Thank you. I’m starting to make as many of my household staple and condiments as possible. May I ask though, what is mixed spice? I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in the spice aisle (though I’ve never looked)

      Hi Lisa,
      Mixed spice is usually used for sweet stuff (like desserts) but I find it really works in this recipe.
      It’s really similar to pumpkin pie spice, so you could substitute that 🙂

    I just realized that I didn’t have any ketchup to go on my turkey meatloaf and that is the only way my kids will eat it. So knowing that my grocery budget for this week was spent I remembered this pin from a week or so ago and decided to try it, I am so glad I did because it came out great. I will be making batches of this…. can anyone tell me the shelf life though???

      Hi Sheik,
      I’m so glad it worked out for you!
      I stored mine in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks and it was fine.
      That’s the longest I’ve ever stored it, so I can’t confirm that it can be stored longer.
