This year I decided to try something new, and that something new is green smoothies. I’m not really big on smoothies in general, so when it comes to a green smoothie recipe, it’s got to be seriously omg-wow-amazing in order for me to even consider drinking it – so you know this healthy smoothie recipe really is as amazing as it sounds!
When I was developing the recipe, I wanted something that tasted like dessert, but was packed full of good-for-you ingredients – and this is certainly what this is! It looks and tastes like a rich, decadent chocolate mousse. When I first made it, it was literally thick enough to eat with a spoon, so I added a touch more milk to get the smoothie consistency.
Although there is no actual chocolate in the smoothie (this is meant to be a healthy smoothie recipe, remember!) the cocoa powder provides an intense depth of chocolate flavour, whilst the natural sweetness in the banana helps to balance out the bitterness of the cocoa and make it taste wonderful.
The main healthy ingredients in this smoothie are: banana (which has fibre, vitamin C & B6 and potassium), cocoa powder (which has protein, potassium, zinc and iron) as well as spinach, which has pretty much everything in the world that is good for you. Seriously – look it up. It’s amazing what nutritional value this vegetable possesses!
If you’re new to green smoothie recipes, don’t let the spinach put you off. I’ve put just enough in this diet smoothie recipe to give you some serious nutritional benefit without adding so much that you can taste it. Thanks to the heaping amount of cocoa powder in the recipe, this healthy chocolate fudge green smoothie doesn’t even have that odd green shade that some green smoothies have!

What vegetables do you sneak into your smoothies?
- 1 ripe banana
- 1/2 cup skimmed milk
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 cup spinach leaves
- Place all the ingredients into a blender and blend for 1-2 minutes, until everything is broken up and combined.
- Taste and add honey, simple syrup or an alternative sweetener, if necessary, before serving.
