Healthy Salmon Burger Recipe

It's almost grilling season, which means it's time for burgers! But not just any burgers. I say we ditch bland beef burgers and dry chicken burgers and swap them for this deliciously light and healthy salmon burger recipe! What do you say? It's got an amazing delicate texture, a wonderful smoky flavor and comes with a taste bud-tingling herb cream cheese!

Healthy Salmon Burger Recipe | This clean eating healthy salmon burger is delicious! It's just as yummy and juicy as an ordinary burger, but so much lighter and better for you. It doesn't leave you feeling heavy or bloated and always goes down well at BBQs and picnics!

It's funny, but I hardly ever fire up the grill during "grilling season". At this time of year, we get crazy temperatures of 95F-105F and no one wants to be standing outside cooking in temperatures like that. If you're like me and don't feel like grilling outdoors, you can totally cook this healthy salmon burger recipe inside on the stove in a non-stick frying pan! Okay, so you won't have the smoky taste of a charcoal BBQ, but you won't have all the mess to clean up either. Score!

How do you make a salmon burger?

Sure, you can go to the store and buy a salmon burger, but why bother when you can make your own at home for a fraction of the price? With this healthy salmon burger recipe, all you need to do is toss your ingredients into the food processor, pulse them a couple of times, shape the mix into a patty and cook your burgers. Honestly, it really is as easy as it sounds! Scroll down and read the recipe below if you don't believe me.

How do you cook a salmon burger?

My favorite way to cook this healthy salmon burger recipe is in a non-stick pan over a medium-high heat. This way you get a nice thin crust on the outside of the burger, the center stays moist and juicy, and you don't have to add any extra oil. Just make sure your pan is nice and hot then cook your burgers for 4-5 minutes on each side. You can cook the burgers in the oven, but that would seriously dry them out. And no one likes a dry, crumbly salmon burger.

How long do you cook salmon burgers on the grill?

Of course, you can totally cook this healthy salmon burger recipe on the grill, too! Because these burgers are super juicy, they're probably a bit too delicate to just slap them on the grill as they are. But if you put a layer of foil on the grill, you can totally place the salmon burgers on top and cook them that way. These burgers are pretty thick, so you should cook them for 4-5 minutes on each side on the grill. Salmon is quite an oily fish, so the patties should produce enough fat so that they don't stick to the foil.

What to serve with this healthy salmon burger recipe

If you're trying to keep things light and healthy, I recommend serving this healthy salmon burger recipe with the herb cream cheese on top of a bed of mixed crisp salad leaves with some red onion slices, cherry tomatoes and avocado chunks. As a side dish, baked zucchini fries are an amazing alternative to ordinary fries. And this lightened up potato salad cuts calories by using Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise.

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 2 burgers

Ingredients

For the burgers

  • ½ lb salmon fillets chopped
  • 2 tablespoons oats
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

For the herb cream cheese

  • 4 oz low-fat cream cheese
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (from approx ½ a lemon)
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon dried thyme
  • â…› teaspoon salt

Healthy salmon burger toppings (optional)

  • lettuce leaves
  • sliced tomato
  • sliced onion
  • burger buns

Instructions

  • Place all the ingredients for the salmon burgers into the bowl of a food processor and pulse several times until the salmon has broken down and the seasonings are mixed in. Don't pulse too much - you still want a few salmon chunks for texture.
  • Tip the salmon mix onto a clean counter and divide into 2. Mold each half into a patty using your hands.
  • Place a large non-stick pan over a medium-high heat and cook the burgers for 4 minutes on each side. While the burgers are cooking, stir together all the ingredients needed for the herb cream cheese and chill until needed.
  • Spread the herb cream cheese on top of the burgers and enjoy. Alternatively, add some lettuce, tomato and onion to your burgers and sandwich them inside a bun for a yummy, filling sandwich.

Thanks so much, Rebecca! My boyfriend HATES cleaning the grill, so we rarely fire it up and almost always cook burgers like this on the stove.
