How to Bake a Potato

Have you every wondered how to make baked potatoes that have crispy, salty skin and light, fluffy insides? Here’s how!

Select the potatoes you want to bake. Try and get them all roughly the same size so they bake evenly.

Wash each potato with water and dry thoroughly using kitchen paper.

Stab the potato 15-20 times all over with a fork to ensure even baking.

Pour a small amount of olive oil onto a plate and roll the potato around so it’s well-coated.

Sprinkle some sea salt onto another plate and roll the oiled potato around so it’s covered in salt.

Lay each of the potatoes on a wire wrack and bake in a pre-heated oven at 450°F.

Gently slide a knife into the centre of each potato to check to see if they’re done. If you can slide the knife into the centre easily, then the potato is done. If you don’t think your potato is fully cooked, leave it to bake for another 10 minutes or so, then check again with a knife.

Different sized potatoes take different times. These potatoes were small and took around 45 minutes. Allow 60 minutes for medium-sized potatoes and up to 90 minutes for large potatoes.

When your potato is done, remove it from the oven and leave on a plate for 5 minutes to cool slightly. When it’s cool enough to touch, use a knife to mark a deep cross shape into it. Be careful not to slice the whole way through!

Pinch two ends of the potato and push into the centre to bring the filling out. If the potato is too hot to handle, use kitchen paper to protect your fingers.

Fluff the insides of the potato up with a fork and serve with your favorite toppings.

    for a ‘no time to bake’ method..I wash/pierce/rub with olive oil and then wrap in dampened papertowel. Place in microwave on high for 5 minutes intervals, as you place in microwave, turn on baking oven to preheat to 375-400. continue cooking the potatoes on high/5 minutes intervals, until the oven is preheated (usually 15 minutes total)…then place potatoes in oven to ‘crisp’ up while plate the rest of your meal…inside fluffy, skin crispy..

    I learned this lesson from my sister in law when I went to Ohio recently. Her filling was Smart Balance spread mixed with sour cream…yum!
